memories from the burnt forest

Drawings made from wood ashes and charcoal gathered in the Sierra de la Culebra in Spain after the forest fires in 2022.

“This is not winter,
and these are no trees,
not anymore.

It is not wood either,
not even real charcoal.
It is no good.

White bones shine brightly
on top of the sooted rug
of this pitch black room.

We walk inside the gut,
and along the burnt feathers
of this giant phoenix.

An eerie silence surrounds us.
The forest is dead,
and the house is on fire.

Yet life goes on,
at least elsewhere,
pyromaniacs versus firefighters.

Capitalism versus nature,
fear versus love;
the story of our lives.”
